"Yellow Flag" Raised for Travel Industry in 2006. Low consumer confidence combined with high heating bills will make travelers pause, experts predict, and growth in the U.S. travel industry will slow in the coming months and early next year. According to Dr. Suzanne Cook, senior vice president of research at TIA, the industry will see gains at 2% in 2006 nationally, compared with 4% growth expected for 2005. "We see some yellow flags that concern me a bit," Dr. Cook said. "We have a cautious consumer in an environment of rising prices." Americans will pay between 30% and 50% more this winter to heat their homes, pinching travel budgets and putting a chill on Americans' vacation plans this winter. Higher air fares and pessimism over the economy add to the cautious outlook. (Source: Tia.org)
